Visio – How to ‘Nudge’ Shapes (and not the page)

In this Visio tutorial, we show you how to use the Nudge feature.

Nudge is a nice little feature when he behaves. You can use him to nudge, nudge, nudge shapes across the page using the arrow keys.

But what happens when he goes rogue?

You try to use Nudge but… using the arrow keys doesn’t move objects? Instead, it moves the entire page.

Tip: You can use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move objects and shapes in Visio.

Visio – How to Stop ‘Nudge’ Moving the Page instead of Shapes

If you find Nudge moves the entire page instead of shapes, Scroll Lock has been turned on, usually by accident.

For example, if you:

  1. Select a shape on your drawing and
  2. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move or “nudge” the shape (SHIFT+ARROW KEY),

… but the entire page moves, instead of the individual objects selected in the drawing window.

Why does this happen?

The Scroll Lock key on your keyboard is enabled.

To fix this issue, press Scroll Lock until your keyboard’s Scroll Lock light (LED) is off.
