Word counts the number of words in your document as you type. The count is displayed at the end of the page in the status bar.

By default, this includes the pages, paragraphs, lines, and characters. However, you can turn this off if you ONLY want to count the actual words in the text.

Step By Step Instructions To Word Count in Word

To see the number of characters, lines, paragraphs, and other information:

  1. Click the word count in the status bar to open the Word Count.

  1. To include non-body text in the word count, select the Include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes check box.

  1. To exclude non-body text in the word count, de-select the Include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes check box.

How To Count Words in Selected Text

To count the number of words in only part of your document:

  1. Select the text you want to count.
  2. Click the Review
  3. Click Word Count.
